It is hard to listen to the radio or television for any longer than fifteen minutes before you hear the word credit crunch.

Its all doom and gloom greedy bankers and redundancies.

One of first big visible victims of this credit crunch on the high street was Woolworth's, every town of any size in this country probably had a Woolworth's.

In the last 10 years I have probably bought two things from Woolworth's and its demise will not affect me a great deal.

I have Friends who will really miss Woolworth's and would be in there twice a week.

I continue document the world around me and took this frame in the last 15 minutes of my local Woolworth's.

Some retailers and organisations are very sensitive to photography inside there stores.

Not wishing to be confronted by store security and possibly loosing my Nikon and my new to me 24mm Nikkor I took this grab shot.

The film I used is Ilford XP2

This is a chromeogenic B&W film, basically its a colour film that has just black dye couplers.

It is processed in the standard C41 colour process which means you can get you film processed and printed quickly at a mini lab.

If you make your prints (Wet prints) in a traditional B&W dark room this film is optimised for this process.

One of the most useful features of this film is the enormous exposure latitude.

You can expose if from ISO50 to ISO3200 on the same roll and you will get a good print.

Ilford recommend you expose the film at ISO400 but if you over expose the film you get extremely fine grain and good shadow detail above iso 400 you will get higher contrast a loss of shadow detail and more grain.

So you are almost guaranteed to get a negative from which you can obtain a good print, just what you need for grab shots under mixed light and a guesstimated exposure.

I personally much prefer conventional B&W film but XP2 is ideal in difficult light when all you need is a print.

Over the weekend in Norwich there were various events connected with The Lord Mayors Celebrations.

One of these events was street entertainers...

The girl in the photograph had walked out from a side street to be confronted with a pixie walking with her dragon complete with a dragon's egg in a hand cart.
This scene totally confused her.

What the ???!!

Help where am I ??

What's going on ??

Oh I see!

She wants me to sit on her dragons egg

I'm off.. everyone is laughing at me.

Found Film Ilford FP4 Chemistry class 1980'S??

I bought an early Voightlander Brillant on Ebay last month. It is a nice early all metal one with a compur shutter and a Skopar lens. The added bonus was that there was a partly exposed roll of film inside!

The film was Ilford FP4 this film was revised to FP4+ in 1990 so the film must have been purchased prior to then.

The film was on frame 4 when I got the camera the wheel on the camera that works the frame counter had left a rusty deposit on the film. so it was exposed some time ago.

I developed the roll of film that day in Kodak X-Tol. I have found that developer works well on old ilford films.

Looking at the photographs it looks like this could be a high school chemistry lesson in progress, bring in an old camera and load some B&W film shoot some film and develop the pictures. I would say that the person that took these pictures turned up with there grandfathers old camera which takes 120 film, and the school did not have a developing tank for the film. so it stayed inside the camera.

The cameras that the other people are using are point and shoot jobs, I would guess that this film was exposed in the 1980's

The voigtlander Brillant that the film was inside is a very nice example I have cleaned its Skopar lens and cleaned the shutter I am in the process of running a film through the camera, The skoppar lenses are very sharp and I have had good results from my other Voightlander brillants that have this lens.

This photograph was taken at this years fringe festival in Edinburgh with a Pentax 67 camera, my back is now hurting now that I had this monster of a camera and a 105 and 150mm lens in my bag for the day. One American photographer commented when I was loading another roll of film into the Pentax " Now that's dedication- do you use that for snaps?!" I shot 3 rolls of transparency film as well I have not got the transparencies back from the lab, should be interesting.

A nice sunny day in Skegness last Sunday it was a bit windy but you cant beat a sea breeze.
As always with my Skegness photographs high contrast and lots of grain, I achieve this with a Red or yellow filter and develop my Tri-X in 1:25 Rodinal

I bought a Kodak folder a while ago, It had a part exposed roll of

Verichrome pan inside. The film was in very poor condition as the backing paper was stuck to the film.

I developed the film with the backing paper on and soaked the paper off when I had processed the film.

I got 3 printable frames and here two of them.

This looks like a very proud mother and son with future daughter in law, its a pity the person who took the photographs did not get them developed as they are super pictures, who knows??

Very high water levels today in Horncastle. Many doors are sandbagged up.

The marks on the pictures are not a processing fault but rather unsurprisingly given the weather rain drops on the UV filter covering the lens.

This series of photographs are shot on fast B&W films. This set of photographs are shot on HP5+ uprated to 800 the lost souls are shot on Neopan 1600. Both are developed in Kodak X-tol. I find this developer very useful for low light shots, I get very good emulsion speed fine grain and good sharpness. Neopan 1600 is a film I have only ever used once before, I developed it in Rodinal it was really grainy but great tones. It really works well in X-tol, I shall use it more for low light shots. The only downside is that it is quite expensive. I bulk load most of my film which keeps my film costs very low. The HP5 is outdated but has been well stored its shooting well even at 800 asa it only cost $15 for 100ft.

This set of photographs are from the two sets of negatives that were in a metal 35mm Ilford film can.

The negatives are in good condition but a little dirty, I am washing them at the moment.

In my last post I was guessing that the photographs were taken in Cyprus well I guessed correct!

The sign in the photo below reads Khirokitia there is another rather blurred photo that has a sign in it that reads Nicosia.

As you can see here we have an RAF camp and an RAF Land rover The markings on the door reads 751 SU That stands for 751 Signals Unit.

A quick search on the Internet revealed...

751 Signals Unit (Cape Greco and Ayious Nikolos),

Commanding officer Sqdn Leader R Street.

A mobile signal unit camped in tents providing radar coverage of the area.

C.O. Sqd Ldr.Mc.Donald 1958.

Detachment at Cape Andreas Mobile Radar unit based at Cape Greco until late 1959 when it was closed and some personal transferred to Nicisia.

This closed Jan l960 and transferred to Cape Gata i.e 280 SU.

This may be the photographer???

As the camera angle is low and the subject has that pensive when is the self timer going to go off look on his face. Indicating to me that the camera is sat on a box and has been pre-focused by the person in the photograph?

Focusing on the camera that took these photographs, When I got the un-exposed films and the two sets of negatives, and had developed the films, it was obvious that the camera had serious film transport problems.

The rolls of film I developed were partially exposed, the frame spacing was all over the place toward the middle of the roll merging into the last frame being a multiple exposure, the remaining unexposed film was all wrinkled up. I think the problem is that the photographer was unfamiliar with his camera and was not loading the film correctly. the film was being wound out the spool by the camera but it was not winding on to the take up spool.

This sort of thing could easily happen with a Contax rangefinder the contax also has a self timer.

The quality of the photographs also suggests Zeiss optics and the first set of negatives is from a roll of Agfa Isopan I.S.S the empty cassette was also in with the films and was printed entirely in German, The photographer may have done a tour in West Germany and got a very good deal on a S/H Contax RF??? and been given a roll of Agfa B&W film.

Next stop Cyprus and some Rolls of Ilford HP3 from the Naffy happily snapping away during his tour in Cyprus, when he gets back home to Blighty he takes his rolls of exposed film for processing and gets a nasty surprise, only two rolls of film have come out OK, The lab has developed one of the rolls of film and found problems, rather than waste money on processing the remaining films he pays for his prints and the unexposed rolls of film are returned by the lab. When he gets home the problem camera and the rolls of film are put in a draw and remain there for 58 years?

Here we are out on patrol in Cyprus.

This photograph has been taken on early on in the campaign. Because later on the Land rovers were modified with a steel pole being mounted onto the front of the bumper to protect the occupants of the Land rover from wires strung across the roads at night by forces hostile to the British forces. Note the front mounted Bren gun

Series 1 Land rovers were not built for comfort.

They don't make them like this anymore...

Found Film Ilford HP3 -200 Weston

Found film is exposed film found in old cameras or in a drawer in a house or garage or some place like that.

With care full development you can often get some interesting pictures.

Your chances of getting an image from a found film depends allot on how the film has been stored since it was exposed.

The type of film can make a big difference to. Fast (sensitive) films tend to degrade faster due to there sensitivity. Slow films tend to yield the best results due to there lesser sensitivity.

The action of time and temperature and solar radiation will cause the film to fog over time. if the fogging is bad you will not be able to see the image, it will be lost in the fog.

With the use of a film developer that keeps fog levels down during development whilst developing the latent image you can get surprisingly good results.

From what I have read in some forums on the Web, Agfa Rodinal, Ilford Microphen and Kodak HC110 are good for this sort of work due to there good anti fogging properties and abilities to pull out the latent image from the film.

Two weeks ago I found on Ebay some exposed rolls of Ilford HP3 200 (Weston) and some Ilford FP3. These films had come from a deceased estate.

When the films arrived in there original metal Ilford cans there was also to my surprise 2 sets of Negatives one is a roll of Agfa Isopan I.S.S and the other is a roll of HP3

A quick look on the web told me that Ilford HP3 200 was on the go from the early 50 to the early 60, it was upgraded to HP3 400. Going on the type of film that I had to develop and the clothing and vehicles in the negatives I got I would say the film was exposed in the early to mid 50's

I clip tested the First roll or film in Kodak X-Tol because thats what I had mixed up, and this is a good dev for fast films. The clip test revealed very little fog in the rolls of HP3 but lots of fog in the FP3, the FP3 cassette looked like it had been opened.

I have a data sheet for these films and came up with a time of 10 minutes for the HP3 in stock X-tol and 8 mins for the FP3

The Fp3 was toatally fogged the other rolls of HP3 yielded some quite good negatives.

I am not sure where the photograph has been taken it may be Paris? or Occupied Germany?

This shot is from the second roll of HP3 and is rather good considering it was taken so long ago and only developed 2 weeks ago.

And finally this is a scan from one of sets of negatives that was in a film can that came with the films, a real bonus.

No party in the park for 2007 ??

The photo above was taken at Party in the park in Boston last year, it is one of my favourite shots I took there, I like it because the girl is almost falling out the frame towards the viewer.

Fast forward to July 2007 and it just has not stop ed raining, Boston council have sadly announced that party in the park has been cancelled, they say on there website that it may be put on later in the year. The cynical side of me thinks that the huge underground water tank they have built in the park is not completed either so there would be no PITP had it been dry.

I hope the weather improves and PITP go on this year, I hope it doesn't wash out the Edinburgh fringe festival as I will be really fed up!

Agfapan Heaven (well almost!)

To some this may be Agfapan heaven to others its a load of B&W film in a box.
It really would be heaven if the 100 rolls of 120 Agfapan 400 was Agfapan 25 or 100. But the 400 is a very fine B&W, it has wonderful tones and really nice grain and is very sharp. I have found Agfapan 400 develops well in Aculux 2 and Rodinal special (for fine grain and good sharpness) If you want grain and good sharpness rate it at 200-320 asa and develop in Rodinal 1:50
Agfa B&W films are hugly underrated films and unfortunately are no longer manufacture after the Liquidation of Agfa Photo.
There is allot of 35mm Agfapan for sale with long self life. If you shoot B&W try this film and if you like it fill up your freezer with Agfapan 100.
Last week on ebay I saw 6 rolls of Agfapan 100 in 120 format go for £26. I got my 100 rolls of Agfapan form a Pro-photographer who had gone digital, the film in the photo has been frozen from new and has lost no emulsion speed and has no base fog.
Still puzzled about this film give it a go or look up Agfapan on Google.

I took this shot in Tattershall when I was running a roll of film through another Voightlander Brillant I have bought. It has the 75mm Skopar lens. After getting the compur shutter going with a few drops of lighter fluid and a tiny amount of oil, and cleaning the lens elements it looks to be a good shooter.

What you are looking at here is a Kodachrome of a field of oil seed rape.

A nightmare for sufferers of hay fever. If you have wondered why thee is so much oil seed rape about? I am told it is being grown for bio fuel.

Here is another Kodachrome taken from Hume Castle, there was a bit of mist but that's nothing unusual for the east coast of Scotland.

Since taking these photographs Kodak has ceased production of Kodachrome 200 so get it while you can.

If you have visited this blog before and looked at any of my photographs you will notice that these ones are a little different. The reason is I have a new lens, I got my hands an an ex rental 15mm 3.5 Nikkor from Calumet.
This is a really wide angle lens, despite the extreme wide angle (for film) it has very little distortion the lines in the church are not bent all over the place. Although I would love a very inexpensive wide angle with loads of distortion.
This lens is ideal for interiors of buildings, you have to be careful with this lens as it has a very large and rather exposed front element, and it is prone to flair.
I have also been experimenting with Tri-X and dilute Microdol-x. The microdol x yields extremely fine grain when used un diluted, you do loose a bit of emulsion speed, and its not terribly sharp, (great for portraits) When you use it at 1-3 you get a bit more speed and actuance and a compensating effect, just the job for inside churches.

I got the train to Norwich on Saturday, I have not been there for a while, I have photographed this chap before but I couldn't resist another shot. Boston would be a whole lot more interesting with people like this on the streets.

I was using a film that I have not used before, it is call ERA Pan, it is made in China it is very inexpensive and from my fist roll I will say its a very good film. good tones fine grain good sharpness and no nasty curl on the film which is a real pain if you are scanning.

I was also using my New canon A1 I had to get another one as my other one has electrical problems, it did suffer from shutter squeal which is common for A series Canons. The problem is caused by the reflex mirror brake bearings running dry and squealing when the mirror moves. Fortunately I was in a camera shop in Norwich and the proprietor fixed it for me free of charge, with a tiny drop of oil in the right place administered with a bent hypodermic needle. The A1 now sounds much better.

After the heavy rain the river levels on the Witham have risen to very high levels.
There has been flooding in Lincoln which is further up stream from where these two photographs were taken. The tides have not been helping as there has not been a very low tide. There are lock gates at sluice bridge in Boston that control the flow of water into the tidal part of the river.

I shot some Kodak HIE last month I used my Leica because rangefinders are much easier to use with IR filters, I also have a good selection of Leitz A36 filters these I can use these on all my Leitz LTM leses. I used a deep red (R.m.) filter for both of these shots, the filter factor for this filter is about 4 stops I rated the film at 25asa for both of these shots, I was metering with a Weston master V. The film is developed in Rodinal 1;25, I don't mind a bit of grain.

I took this shot last month I was using a Jupiter 12 on my Leica IIIF. I used Agfa APX 100 I am experimenting with various developers with this film. This shot is developed in Ilford DDX. I prefer the look I get with the film with Paterson Aculux 2 and Tetenal Neofin Blue. Rodinal at 1:50 is supposed to be good combination at EI80.

I visited Tattershall Castle this afternoon, I took this shot with my Leica IIIF using a 35mm Soviet Lens, It is a Jupiter 12 this lens cost a fraction of a 35mm Elmar or a Summarcron. I was using Ilford PanF+ and ADOLUX APH09 at 1:60 to get maximum detail and sharpness. I wanted to see how well this lens Performs. I think it has performed very well indeed compared to a Leitz lens or dare I say a Nikon lens..

Sunday was very warm for April and brought the crowds to skegness.

I haven't been to Skegness for a while, As always its Tri-X developed in Rodinal for lots of grain and high contrast and sharpness. I have just started another 100 ft roll of Tri-X this is one of two rolls I purchased in the USA last year they had both been frozen so the film was good, this bulk roll is from the previous version of Tri-X it is labeled Tri-X Pan. The previous roll was the current Tri-X Professional. I have developed it slightly differently from my other Skegness shots, I used to rate the film at 400 asa and develop for 7 mins in 1:25 Rodinal. This time I have rated the Tri-X Pan at 320 ASA and developed for 6 mins. The next time I shoot this film in bright sunlight I would reduce the development time by about 1 minute as the negatives are a little bit to dense.

I was quite surprised how fast I got through my last 100 ft roll of Tri-x i am probably 20 feet into my current bulk roll!!, I will have to see if I can pick up a couple more bulk rolls of Tri-X on Ebay.

This peacock enjoys sitting in the sun in a patch of daffodils

While this one prefers sitting on a hedge and staring down at passers by.

Both shots were taken at Tatershall Castle, Worth a visit as the castle has been restored and you can get right up to the battlements for a good view of the surrounding countryside.

False Colours.

To get this effect I have used a special type of film called Kodak Ekatachrome Infra-Red (EIR)

This film records the visible spectrum as well as the infrared spectrum, you can alter the effect by the use of coloured filters used in B&W photography and infrared filters, A yellow filter gives very dramatic results. This film must be handled in total darkness so you will need a changing bag or access to a dark room. If you purchase your film from Jessops I am sure they would let you borrow there changing bag and load your camera in the shop.

This film is E6 process or AR-5

I used to live in Selkirk in 1994 and used to drink in the Town Arms now and again.

When I last visited it was a very traditional pub.. a long way from the likes of brewers fayre. I would recommend going in to this pub if you are visiting Selkirk you wont forget it.

I used my Leica IIC to take these two photographs. It would appear that there is a problem with the shutter curtains. I think the second curtain is sticking slightly, this shows up in the first photograph. The extreme left of frame is very overexposed, the streaking may be due to the film processing hopefully or a shutter curtain that is not light tight. If any Leica users out there have any ideas your comments are welcome. Most 50 year old Leica's could always use a service.

I had to run along Princes Street to get this shot, not the best idea with a Nikon F2 which weighs a ton!

First roll of Kodachrome 64 for a while. for £5.90 a roll that includes processing its a very good price for such a good slide film. The downside is the processing takes 2 weeks, you can get hour process E6 in most cities the moment.

This shot is taken with a Zeiss Ikon Ikonata 520.
It shoots 16- 6x4.5cm frames on 120 film. It is fitted with a very sharp 7cm f3.5 uncoated Tessar, I always use it with a lens hood.
I picked this camera up on eBay for a very small amount of money, it had been in someones attic for years, even after all these years the slow shutter speeds run very well, it has a compur shutter with speeds from 1 second to 1/300 B&T. This little folder fits into the palm of my hand when folded and is a joy to use.
A handy tip for avoiding fogged film when using one of these cameras with pan film is to cover the frame counter windows with pieces of black tape and remove them when you advance the film and stick them back on. The camera has two windows which correspond to the numbers on the backing paper on 120 film for 6x9 format, so when you load a film you wind until the number 1 appears in the window closest to the film spool. when you shoot the first frame wind on until the number 1 appears in the second window beside the take up spool and so on to number 8 then you will get your 16 exposures on 120 film.

I don't often run a colour film through the leica, the pictures at the start of this roll were taken with an un-coated 5cm Summar they have a nasty green/ blue hue this may be the result of using an un-coated lens with colour film? But I have used this lens before with Ferriana colour film who knows?

This shot is shot with a 9cm un-coated Elmar with a lens hood and its fine.

I own a number of Voigtlander Brillants, they all shoot well even the the most basic models. The one I used here has the better Skopar lens and a compur shutter. You can pick these cameras up for under £15 often the slow speed on the shutter may be a little sticky, this is usually cured by a careful application of lighter fluid. the lenses are easy to dismantle and clean to.

They are great fun to use and the results are always pleasing.

One big advantage with the new photo scanners is they will take 120 roll films and sheet film.

I got my self a new scanner two weeks ago so I can now scan all the film formats I use, this is good news as I will use my TLR's and Box cameras more.

I took this shot last year with a Zeiss Ikon Box Tengor, this is the Rolls Royce of box cameras, its a joy to use. I have some 50asa 120 slide film I might run a roll through the Tengor and see what happens.

Another wander round the Antique & Curiosity shops of Horncastle. Last time I was using a 125asa film and a Leica IIC, this camera does not have a slow speed dial so the slowest shutter speed is 1/30. This time I was using a Leica IIIF which has the slow speed dial. A 400asa film helps to although all the indoor shots are at 1/4 second.

I took these shots on sunday with a Leica II. I was a little worried about being acused of shop lifting as I was carrying the Leica in my coat pocket. The leica is an antique it self. I was using Ilford FP4 which is not the best film to use for dimly lit indoor shots with the Leica IIC as this camera does not have a slow speed dial so the slowest shutter speed is 1/30, I did have a f2 lens which did help and the FP4 is pushed to 200ASA.

I haven't shot any slow B&W film for a while, I have mainly been shooting Tri-X and Delta 400. I was using a Leica II last week in Norwich and using Plus-X pan and Pan F+. You get so much more detail with the slower emultions.

Saturday was a very clear sunny day, an ideal oppertunity to use a 25 ASA film.

ADOX CHS 25 is one of the very few 25asa films on the market.

Both shots are shot using my 28mm f3.5 Nikkor + Yellow #1 Filter.

The film is developed in Adolux APH09 AKA old formula Rodinal, I used it at 1-100, this is supposed to give you soft negatives and fine grain. The negs are a bit on the soft side for scanning with my clunky old scanner, but will print well.

Couple of shots here from Boston , I was Testing a couple of new lenses and using Ilford pan F+
The Lenses are Leitz Elmar' s One is a coated 5cm f3.5 Elmar manufactured just after WWII and the other is a 9cm f4 Elmar manufatured just before WWII. In short they are good.
Both shots have been taken with a Leitz Yellow #1 filter Exopsure for the First shot is 1/100 @f8 the second shot using the 9cm lens is at 1/200 @f 5.6

I have not been using my Leica's much lately so I took my Leica IIC with me when I visited Norwich. It came with a 1948 vintage 5cm coated Elmar lens and a 1938 vintage un-coated 9cm Elmar lens, Both are in good order.

The two shots above are shot on Kodak Plus-X Pan (old emulsion) @125 asa and developed in Agfa Rodinal 1-50 The exposure was 1/30 @ f5.6

It was rather a gloomy day on Saturday but I think the camera has peformed well.. it is over 60 years old!

Makes a nice change from using a modern Nikon SLR.

I found this wooden carving in the Stump in Boston at the end of a row of seats for the quire.

The object on the the head of the figure is dog.

This shot is taken with My Nikon F2 Using a 200mm-f4 Lens wide open (Hand Held)

It is shot on Fuji Neopan 400 at EI400 Developed in Ilford Perceptol 1+1 for 15 mins.

I have not used this film before but I will say its good Stuff.
